It usually takes 4-6 weeks before I see one. PCGS <table style="border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); padding: 0pt; margin-right: 10px;" align="left" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td colspan="2" style="font-size: 90%;" align="center"> Eric http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload...54bace.mugshot </td> </tr> </tbody></table> Hi all, Got into coins by accident in 1984 while playing with the amazing gold market. In California, where there was no tax on physical gold transactions over $1,000, and no particular records, this was a wonderful playground. Until it went bust. You watch the spot and move a suitcase and bank it, and watch for a down-jiggle and buy, and wait until you can't stand it anymore and sell, and. . . God, what a trip! Before it all went toes up, I got fascinated with St. Gaudens and Morgan $20 gold pieces, but not being a coin person I got stuck with several of them because I knew enough to quickly sell off the bullion, but not the collectables. Now it's twenty years later and they've been sitting in the bank box and this is not something I want to hold on to because the cash is attractive, now. So I'm trying to find out about the most reasonable ways to unload while gold is $550+ and get a reasonably honest deal out of it. I went to a few dealers in town, and (as someone here predicted) everything I had was junk, of course. They could give me the gold spot price plus $50, even with the ones in PCGS holders (the older ones). I guess people believe them often enough so they weren't bothered when I walked away. They know there's more fish, and why bother working for a reasonable commision when you can lie a little and get so much more? Joining PCGS will cost me $50, and grading 5 pieces will cost me another $30. Plus postage and insurance this costs me $100. Then what? Are the buy/sell forums on PCGS reasonable places to deal? What about their authorized dealers? I don't have enough, or pretty enough for an auction, but a couple of pieces approach $4,000 or more in the PCGS listings. I'm not worried about getting taken by crooks, but I am worried about getting taken advantage of by dealers who know stuff that I don't. So I'm asking, here. Are the PCGS fora a good place to sell? Does anyone have a dealer they recommend? Does e-bay have any possibility? Is PSGS the place, or is it irrelevent? Is my story amusing enough to get a knowlegable response here? cheers! The other tribe photo is a 10 cent piece from France... 1917. Good example of a coin that's dirty but still in relatively good condition. Re: newer coin collecter here trying to find info on whats hot and what to look for any help is greatly appreciated <table style="border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); padding: 0pt; margin-right: 10px;" align="left" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td colspan="2" style="font-size: 90%;" align="center"> David http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload...25326f.mugshot </td> </tr> </tbody></table> Well... your wheat pennies are worth about one cent each, unless they're in really great condition. (everybody has wheat pennies) Your silver dollars might be worth more; I have one that's in fairly good condition although I don't think I'd be able to get more than a couple bucks for it. It was my grandmother's anyway and I got it when she died so it's less of a collector's item for me and more of a family heirloom. I've found that coin collection is less about how old the coin is and more about the condition of the coin and how many other coins are out there like it. I have a 1879 coin that is probably worth nothing -- it is so worn it's barely readable. I have a collection of 43 1976 bicentennial quarters. It's probably worth about $10.75 because they're so common. But hey... maybe that'll change in 1000 years. (Same thing with the state quarters) Don't clean your coins. I know as a starting collector you'll be tempted to because they'll "look better"... but most serious collectors consider a cleaned coin to be ruined. A dull but unworn coin is worth more than a shiny coin that's been cleaned. Going to coin shows to find out how much your collection is worth is a complete waste of time. Most dealers are only willing to tell you how much they'll give you for a coin if you're actually willing to sell it to them. If you only want an appraisal, they'll tell you all your coins are worthless, and you'll leave thinking that the information you get from them was also worthless. I handed my collection to a dealer and he casually thumbed through it and promply told me "What you've got here is mostly what is considered 'Junk Coins', uh... except for this one"... and pointed to a Chinese coin that I have. "It's worth a couple dollars," he said. I thought to myself that he was probably telling me all this because he wanted to buy that coin, and he figured that if he told me that it was the only coin in my collection worth anything, I'd be happy to sell it to him. My guess is that it was probably worth a lot more than that. But I didn't want to sell any of my collection; I was just curious as to how much it was worth. And he knew that. Tell us more about what you have. newer coin collecter here trying to find info on whats hot and what to look for any help is greatly appreciated <table style="border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); padding: 0pt; margin-right: 10px;" align="left" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td colspan="2" style="font-size: 90%;" align="center"> tink... http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload...256d5e.mugshot </td> </tr> </tbody></table> i have many wheat pennies and lots of gold and silver dollars all prior are american plus i have no-longer circulated coins and many out of press bills to review please tell me how i am doing for a starter in this collection tink Re: ok, the kinds of coins I have <table style="border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); padding: 0pt; margin-right: 10px;" align="left" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td colspan="2" style="font-size: 90%;" align="center"> Anthony http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload...ac5f5e.mugshot </td> </tr> </tbody></table> I used to collect a little more seriously, but even when I was actually buying coins, I wasn't spending lots of money. I would buy an occasional coin because I liked it and could afford it, or I'd go through the local dealer's "junk foreign" box, and find some interesting older coins and add a few that were pretty or from countries I didn't have. Historical interest counts for me as much as rarity, and there are some historically interesting coins which are rather inexpensive. These days, I'm limited mostly to collecting new state quarters as I receive them, and anything interesting which crosses my pocket. Though I did add a few Colombian coins and notes when I visited recently. Re: ok, the kinds of coins I have <table style="border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); padding: 0pt; margin-right: 10px;" align="left" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td colspan="2" style="font-size: 90%;" align="center"> Steve http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload...72c9b6.mugshot </td> </tr> </tbody></table> I'm in the same boat, I have been doing this on and off for many years, but only recently decided to actually put the collection into sensible sleeves for protection. I collect both coins and notes - again though, whichever takes my fancy at the time. For example, I figured the Irag notes might be on interest / value one day. I have a binder of worldwide coins, and 2 UK binders, as well as a binder of notes from around the world. Looking for a local school kids I guess as I have loads of doubles. Kids dont seem to collect coins / stamps like they used to. Re: ok, the kinds of coins I have <table style="border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); padding: 0pt; margin-right: 10px;" align="left" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td colspan="2" style="font-size: 90%;" align="center"> Spac... http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload...555aba.mugshot </td> </tr> </tbody></table> the neat thing about the scots (or the UK in general) is that the banks issue currency. NOT the government! So, who knows what you can find in circulation :-) Re: ok, the kinds of coins I have <table style="border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); padding: 0pt; margin-right: 10px;" align="left" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td colspan="2" style="font-size: 90%;" align="center"> lawayne http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload...8a72c3.mugshot </td> </tr> </tbody></table> Great for you, the coins and currency you have are a great start, beginner or long time colletor no ones is going to laugh at you. Who knows with the euro now out your coins may be worth alot someday. I collect what I like, I do have some investment coins, gold mostly, but most of what i have is because of the history of the coins, I have some coins from the 1860's and like to think of who may have had that coin during the civil war. Also the coins are like a memory of the countrys you have been to, enjoy them. I will be going to Scotland and Ireland next year and will be getting some coins from there to remember the trip. ok, the kinds of coins I have <table style="border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); padding: 0pt; margin-right: 10px;" align="left" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td colspan="2" style="font-size: 90%;" align="center"> Spac... http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload...555aba.mugshot </td> </tr> </tbody></table> You guys will laugh at me, but I'm a super beginner and not devoted to it. Every time we're in a new country I keep the coins I get. So, I have some 50p pieces from the UK (They don't make the boxy ones anymore), I have some 1 pound notes from the UK (supposedly they don't use them anymore too). I have some french coins from the 80's and various othe countries coins. Nothing really old, just stuff that I kept. So, do serious collectors laugh at me? Or do they say keep on keeping them and someday you might get something worthwhile?
